Excerpt from: Lose the Diet
From the Chapter: Re-Connecting with Yourself

Many of the tools that are mentioned in this book come down to one basic concept: Loving and respecting ourselves enough so that we can focus on our own need to find balance in our lives. It’s about raising our self-esteem so that we can find the strength to reach whatever goal we wish to achieve, whether the goal is a healthy weight or something else.  And above all, to feel connected, so that we do not try to fill the emptiness of feeling disconnected with excessive amounts of food.
In order to feel connected, it is important to be present. Even though your day may be very busy, you can still take a moment to enjoy the sights, sounds, and scents of the world around you. Notice the beauty of the sky. Listen to the birds. Look at the beauty of flowers. Or in the winter, the beauty may be in the pure glistening snow.
When you take a break from your job or whatever it is that you do in your daily life, spend some time with yourself. Write in a journal. Enjoy a good book and feel connected to the world around you, knowing that everything is connected in some way.
You are actually part of this big beautiful universe. Think of it like this: The chair that you are sitting on is connected to the ground (or to a building that is connected to the ground), which is connected to the plants, trees, animals, oceans mountains and the entire planet. You are not alone. You are “one” with everything.
Rather than believe that the place in which you dwell and its contents are the only thing that is yours, consider that you are really connected to the whole world. Even though you may be “homeless”, you are really not, for this world is your home. And, it is amazing how many people there are who are willing to share their home or their belongings with someone else. Besides, when we die, we cannot take it with us, so everything that we possess cannot be ours forever.
Our possessions, and everything in the universe is ever changing. The home that we live in, and other possessions that we “own” are only temporary. But it is our inner being, or our soul that is eternal. That is the one possession that we can truly call our own. And as a result, we can be our own best friend.
In your daily life, keep in mind that tomorrow never comes. So to not waste any time, it is important to enjoy the moment, and the beauty of it is that it doesn’t cost a thing. After all, we are forever evolving, and once you reach one goal, or obtain another possession, you will continue to want more. It is simply human nature.
If we become aware of the constant connection with ourselves, or our eternal soul, then no matter what happens around us and no matter how much things change, we never have to feel “disconnected”. We can feel more satisfied within ourselves, and have less of a need to fill the insecure feeling that we may be experiencing with food.

The 13th century poet and mystic Rumi understood this when he wrote:

The Journey Starts Here
Don’t go off sightseeing.
The real journey is right here.
The great excursion starts from exactly where you are.
You are the world.
You have everything you need.
You are the secret.
You are the wide opened.
Don’t look for the remedy for your troubles outside yourself.
You are the medicine.
You are the cure for your own sorrow.

"A diet (pronounced Die-It) results in a feeling of deprivation and dis-empowerment.  In order to achieve success, you must release the diets and tap into your own inner power.  Only then will you discover permanent results".  Kathy Balland
